March 5, 1815, Franz Anton Mesmer died - the creator of the theory of "animal magnetism".

He studied at Dillengen Jesuit University, then at the University of Ingolstadt, where he studied theology. He studied law at the University of Vienna, but eventually transferred to the medical faculty. He received the title of doctor of medicine, wrote a dissertation on the theme “On the influence of stars and planets as healing powers” (Latin: De planetarum influxu in corpus humanum). He developed the idea of the existence of a universal gravitational fluid.

On July 28, 1774, Mesmer considered as day of animal magnetism discovery the day when he cured a patient with magnets and water containing iron. Mesmer had a lot of work to prove that his method was effective. He managed to convince in that the Secretary of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences by healing him. November 28, 1775 Mesmer became a member of the Bavarian Academy.

In Vienna, the scientific community was opposed to Mesmer and his methods, he was considered a charlatan. A major scandal has turned out because of the blind pianist, who was patronized by Empress Maria Theresa. According to Mesmer, the pianist herself and her father, she began to see the outlines of objects. However, the campaign against the activities of Mesmer bore fruit, he was declared a charlatan, and was ordered to stop the practice or leave Vienna. The empress herself was opposed to Mesmer. Mesmer left Vienna, for a time, plunged into depression, but, having moved to Paris, took heart, because he became extremely in demand among patients. The rumor about him came even to Marie-Antoinette. The scientific community again disliked Mesmer: the pamphlet war was declared to him by the Sorbonne Medical Faculty: its scientists attributed the success of Mesmer’s method to the imagination of patients.

Mesmer organized the Société de l’Harmonie Universelle with headquarter in central Paris. During the revolution, Mesmer left France and began to travel through Germany and England. In Vienna in 1793, he was accused of anti-state activities and expelled to Iznang, Bishopric of Constance. In 1794 he received the citizenship of the Swiss canton of Thurgau, where he continued to conduct his practice, but his services were no longer popular. The same thing happened then in Paris and Versailles. He devotes this time to writing papers and memoirs.

On March 5, 1815, Mesmer died of a heart attack in the building of the Meersburg Hospital of the Holy Spirit.

De planetarum influxu in corpus humanum).
