On June 20, 1584 John Dee wrote in his diary that Edward Kelly saw in the magic crystal “four beautiful castles standing on four sides of the world, and from each came the voice of the Trumpeter. Then it seemed to him that from each Castle, a cloth more than the usual tablecloth was dropped to the ground. That canvas that was cast from the Castle in the east was red in appearance. Cloth from the Castle in the south - white. The canvas from the Castle in the west was seemingly green, with round tubercles. In the Castle in the north, a canvas was laid out or thrown at the feet of the gate, completely black in appearance. ” These four castles are also referred to in the Dee records by the four houses and the Watchtowers.
