On October 2, 1857, Arthur Edward Waite was born — the author of a number of books on the theory and history of occultism, the first Englishman to publish books on martinism in English. He recited in English the concepts of Eliphas Levi, the concept of Louis Claude de Saint-Martin, wrote a book about the history of the Rosicrucians, the history of Kabbalistic movements and other topics of interest to students of occult science.
Waite compiled a book “A New Encyclopaedia of Freemasonry: Their Rites, Literature, and History” (1921). The book is a curious reference to the history of Freemasonry. In April 1921, Waite became a member of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.).
In January 1891, Waite became a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (though not a frequent visitor to the Lodge meetings), and after the collapse of the Order, reformatted it in a mystical Christian way, rewrote opening and closing rituals, as well as initiation rituals, thus forming the “Brotherhood of the Rossy Cross”. Arthur Edward Waite also co-authored the famous Tarot deck “Rider-Waite-Smith”, built on the basis of the instructions of the Order of the Golden Dawn.
