On October 25, 1916, Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse died (also known by his literary pseudonym - Dr. Papus) - French occultist, Martinist, Freemason, hypnotist, one of the most active doers of the occult enlightenment of the end of XIX - the beginning of the XX century, the founder of the Martinist Order, a member of the Ordre Kabbalistique de la Rose Croix.
Gérard Anaclet Vincent Encausse was born in Spain in A Coruña (Spain). His mother was Spanish and his father was a French chemist. When Gérard Encausse was four years old, his family moved to Paris, where he received his education. Papus spent a lot of time at the Bibliothèque Nationale, studying books on Kabbalah and magical art, as well as the writings of Eliphas Levi. Gerard Ancossus took the literary pseudonym "Papus" from "Nuctemeron of Apollonius of Tyana", which was published as an appendix to Eliphas Levi's "Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie" (1855). In 1888, together with Stanislas de Guaita and Joséphin Péladan, he founded the Ordre Kabbalistique de la Rose Croix. In the same year, Gerard Encausse, together with Lucien Chamuel, founded "Librarie du Merveilleux" and the monthly magazine "L'Initiation", which had been published until 1914.
Gerard Encausse was a member of many different occult societies of his time, was a very famous figure in occult circles around the world.
In 1891, Papus, together with Augustin Chaboseau, founded the Martinist Order. In 1893, Papus was ordained as bishop of l'Église Gnostique de France by Jules Doinel, the founder of the Church. In 1895, after Duanel renounced the Church, he left it under the control of a synod of three former bishops, one of whom was Encausse.
In March 1895, Papus joined the Paris Ahathoor Temple of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
Gerard Encausse visited Russia three times: in 1901, 1905 and 1906, helping Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra both as a doctor and in terms of questions of an occult nature. For Nicholas II, Papus, in particular, evoked the spirit of Alexander III, the father of Nicholas II, to seek advice from him. The spirit of Alexander III made a prophecy, according to which the reign of Nicholas II would end as a result of the revolution. However, Papus said that he would magically protect Nicholas II as long as he was alive. The reign of Nicholas II lasted only 141 days after the death of Papus.
Papus is the author of more than 400 articles and 25 books on occult topics. His writings include «L'Occultisme Contemporain», «Traité méthodique de Science Occulte», «La Science Des Mages», «Le Diable et l'occultisme», «Traite Méthodique De La Magie Pratique», «La Kabbale», «Le Tarot Divinataire».
During the World War I, Gerard Encausse joined the army medical corps. Working in a hospital, he contracted tuberculosis and died in Paris on October 25, 1916, at the age of 51.
